Note that labeling a news source as "legitimate" does not mean that the organization is perfect. Nor does it mean that all "legitimate" news sources are equal in the quality of their journalism. But all of the sources labeled as "legit" in this exercise have standards in place that are designed to help maximize the credibility of the information they report. They are also accountable for mistakes and correct them.
The "illegitimate" (or "fake") source in each pair generally has no aspiration to be credible and does not correct the false information it reports or shares. In fact, typically, these sites knowingly distribute false information, either to generate web traffic and ad revenue, or to sow confusion and discord, or for other ideological purposes.
