Article on NBC 12 titled Making tastier school lunches part of workshop. Video still of instructors and cafeteria workers in a kitchen. Article reads HAVELOCK, Craven County — School lunches are as much a part of the day for children as the classes they are in and the books they use. Making those lunches as delicious for the students is important, too. Instructors at the N.C. K-12 Culinary Institute in Raleigh were helping school cafeteria workers make better meals for students. There were 24 managers and supervisors from area school cafeterias at Havelock Elementary School Wednesday learning new culinary skills that will hopefully help them make better food. Chef instructors started their teaching in the classroom then they take what they have learned to the kitchen to practice and create different recipes. "We're feeding America's children, so if kids don't have a full belly and they're not eating healthy food, they're not going to do well in school," said Vahista Ussery, chef instructor for N.C. K-12 Culinary Institute. "It's our job to nourish them and provide that great nutrition that they need." The concept of the training is to teach it forward, which means the lessons cafeteria workers learn can then be passed along to their food teams at their respective schools.
